To give you an idea of the kind of writing you’ll receive in your guide, here’s this month’s introduction to a cycle when we find ourselves celebrating the Alder Moon from the Celtic Tree calendar, the Egg Moon from the Algonquin Tribes’ tradition, the astrological Full Moon in Libra and the Japanese flower-watching festival of Hanami…

It was the noise that made me look up. The sky was a pure blue that stretched for miles out towards the horizon, and the sun, which had been missing from these lands for many weeks, was a bright orb hanging high above our heads. I squinted upwards, my eyes scrunched up as I tried to peer through the protection of my eyelashes, but I still couldn’t see them.

Then, arching across the cornflower blue heavens, I saw two blurred silhouettes chasing each other, calling to one another, swooping and diving, spiralling and dancing. Two tiny birds repeating their song over and over to one another. A skybound seduction sung out in cadences of natural harmony.

I am reminded of that fabulous scene in that old Disney classic Bambi when all the woodland animals start courting, and the owl explains that this is part of a cycle: that they are all “twitterpated”.

Isn’t twitterpated such a fabulous word?

And it seems appropriate that we begin on our journey through the next three lunar cycles, as this is the time of courtship and companionship, of seduction and sexuality. We invite connections of the body and through the body. We are transitioning from maiden to lover.

This is also the season of light. We have passed the equinox when light and dark are in balance with one another, and now the scales have tipped in favour of the sun and warmth. The lightening of our days seems to have a corresponding effect on the lightening of our hearts. We laugh more easily. We dance for no reason other than it feels good. We make space in our days for free play, because now is the time for unadulterated fun.

Do you remember the story of the grasshopper and the ant? The grasshopper plays and lazes about in the sun all summer, while the ant busily gathers supplies for the coming of the winter. The moral of the story is supposed to be that the ant who has worked all summer has the right idea and that the grasshopper needs to learn a lesson in mastering a good work ethic.

However, as with all things in life, balance is the key, and in Western culture our emphasis tends to be more on work than it is on play. So this moon cycle, take a leaf out of the grasshopper’s book and gift yourself some time to play. Take a lesson from those wee birds that were singing so joyously and give yourself over to what feels good.

This is the season of the lover, so embrace this part of yourself and have fun!
