First There Was New York – Next Stop Paris?

Now you might remember that last week I shared that 3 of my selfies had been selected as part of an exhibition in New York. Well, the same organisation See:Me is pulling together an exhibition in Paris. And I’d really love to be there. I’ve submitted 9 of my most recent selfies which I’ve created using double exposures, like the one above. I’m mixing together two images – a selfie and one other – to create a new image, one that situates myself in my environment.

Why am I telling you all this? Well, because I’d really appreciate your vote for the People’s Choice Award. If you feel called to support my work, please do consider voting for me by clicking on the link below…

My Artist Statement…

My name is Amy Palko and I live in Edinburgh, Scotland in a part of the city called Newhaven. My apartment overlooks the deep harbour, the wide open mouth of the River Forth, the island of Inchkeith and the icy cold North Sea, and my psyche, as I’m discovering, is indelibly marked by my connection to this landscape: the shifting tides, the pulse of the lighthouses, the coming and going of the ships, the plaintive cry of gulls and the call of the sea. My work reflects this influence while exploring the constructions of a feminine self through the medium of self-portraiture. It implicitly references the Scottish myth of the Selkie Wife and this myth’s relationship to contemporary feminine archetypes as a way of approaching the slippage of seemingly fixed identities.
