No Such Thing As A Bad Goddess
I’m working through the first big batch of 2014 My Word Goddess Readings right now, and it struck me as I was emailing one out, that some of these goddesses might be interpreted as “bad” goddesses to get as a guide for the year. That someone might read the description and read doom and gloom into the coming months, when that’s really not the case.
Yes, there are some goddesses that we associate with the light, with ease and luxury and wealth and romance. And there are goddesses that we associate with the dark, with challenge and release and transformation and struggle.
But the truth is that all goddesses, every single one of them, come with their unique set of gifts and challenges. The packaging may vary, and some may be more “appealing” than others – but opportunity resides within each.
For example….
- Baba Yaga – a crotchety crone goddess that sets near impossible challenges for us to meet – but what she actually gives us is the gift of wisdom – the opportunity to integrate the wealth of our life’s experience.
- Nyai Loro Kidul – a victim whose story resembles Cinderella with a twist – she tells us that we can release ourselves from our conditioning – she’s an invitation into freedom so that we can stop silencing ourselves and truly sing the song of our soul.
- The Erinyes – A trio of goddesses that visit retribution on treacherous family members – but actually offer a support system for us as we experience “crisis” – the self undergoing deep and lasting transformation – and containing us in our soul-soup moments prior to metamorphic revelation.
- Kali Ma – Skulls around her neck, tongue extended, terrifying vision – and yet she is the deeply compassionate mother that clears a way for her children to grow – she may do it in direct and surprising ways – but the opportunity for radical change and growth is her gift.
- Coatlicue – A goddess of grief – but perhaps more profoundly, of release and of de-armouring the heart – an invitation into deep feeling and profound compassion – an opening and an awakening.
So yes, there are no negative goddesses, no bad guides, no archetypes to try and avoid. Every single one of them offers great riches. But they ask that you go forward with them willingly. They have so much to teach you, so much to give you. Receive their gifts and learn from their wise ways. They hold the soul medicine you need.
