Love Letters to Cybele – A Guest Post From Deb Smouse
This guest post by Deb Smouse is part of a series celebrating the My Word Goddess Readings by honouring the gifts of the goddesses that stepped forward in 2014….
For a decade now, I’ve chosen a Word (or three) for my year. It was one of the first conscious choices I made to create my life instead of just letting it happen to me. I would love to tell you that it makes life “easier”, but that would be a lie. What it has done, though, is allowed me to be pulled into the magic that setting a focus and intention can do to transform you.
Last year, I added as part of my annual preparation for the year, I added a Goddess Word reading from Amy Palko.
When I received Cybele, I was at first disappointed, because I didn’t recognize her. What did this Turkish Goddess have to show me of my Bestial Nature? How did that tie into the words I had already selected for my 2014 theme: Passionate Amazonian Faith.
Then I did what I advise every client: stop looking at the surface and be willing to go a little deeper.
I wrote my first love letter to Cybele and invited her to show me her heart. Amy’s introduction to Cybele said this was a year of catharsis, and indeed it has been.
From the time I was a little girl, I was admonished for being too big, too bright, too loud and just flat too much. The most sacred, inner part of me is bursting at the seams to dance and sing and bring light into the world, but for years I have forcibly tapped that inner essence of myself down in an attempt to be invisible. I hoped that by being invisible, I would be accepted and loved.
Amongst the words for Cybele are wild, free, release and truth. Under her watching eye, I was given permission to throw off my cloak of invisibility and release the most secret and sacred part of who I was born to be – which in truth, is a bit of a wild child.
Let me be truthful with you: I am passionate and impetuous and stubborn. I am the woman that seems bigger than life. I love hard and know that it can make me challenging to love. But Cybele showed me that when it comes to the truth, for the first time in my life I am safe to be me.
I describe myself as a Tarnished Southern Belle, and Cybele was inviting me to fully embody that moniker. She asked me to firmly step into all the ways I’ve chosen to break the rules of polite society and to unapologetically take a stance in the truth of who I am and who I was born to be. She implored me to humbly acknowledge that I’ve made the right choices for myself, even if others don’t approve.
Cybele invited me to finally make peace with the simple fact the passionate intensity is not for the faint of heart – and that is how it should be. Because, we shouldn’t have to stop shining our light because it’s too bright for others.
Though Amy shared a dozen ways to connect with my Goddess over the year, I chose to do what I know works for me: each month, I wrote a love letter to Cybele.
Some months, the letters were of gratitude and other months, a plea for release from the pain. Because, let’s be honest: love is not always comfortable and truth isn’t always easy. No matter with the feelings I was experiencing as I began each letter, my devotion to monthly love letters to Cybele rewarded me with a deeper tenderness of acceptance for the wild and the bold within me.
It’s with a touch of bitter sweetness that I will be writing my final love letter to Cybele in the coming days as I reluctantly bid her goodbye. If there is one thing Cybele taught me, we must regularly release the past so that we can continue to evolve and grow. It’s time to release her to 2014 as I openly embrace my 2015 Goddess Anuket.
As for you, my darling, welcome a Goddess into your life for a year. She will encourage the most sacred core of who you are to be born to emerge within your world. Your devotion will be rewarded with revolutionary shifts.
