Yeah, but what is it that you actually do?
So, I was setting up my pension with my brother last month. I figured it was probably time. I’ve been putting it off long enough, but now I just needed to bite the bullet and get it sorted. Time to grow up and be fiscally responsible – eep!
(me and my brother – this is actually a selfie to mark our first tram ride – hahaha!)
So, anyway, we’re sitting on opposite sides of his desk and I’m sipping on hot tea while he’s filling in this wee booklet so he can figure out which investments to recommend. As he’s my brother, he’s able to answer most of the questions himself – date of birth, names and ages of children, marriage status etc. However, when he gets to the question of “Occupation” he looks up at me, and we don’t even have to exchange one word. A look is enough. He has no idea how to answer this one. We both burst out laughing. And then he says, ‘Yeah, but what is it that you actually do?’
Well, the answer to that doesn’t fit neatly in a allocated text box in a form designed for a one maybe two word response. We went with ‘entrepreneur’ in the end. It seemed like the simplest and most accurate description, but really even a word as capacious and (let’s face it) vague as ‘entrepreneur’ feels stretched to breaking point to cover exactly what it is that I do. Let me explain….
Yes, I am a business woman and my business is aligned with that which I most desire to experience and explore. I use various different vehicles to express that desire, but what drives me forward is my own appetite for art, adventure, intimacy, wisdom, innovation… a life well-lived and on my own terms. It is not limited by an arbitrary job title I give myself – only by my imagination.
For example, last year I offered 2 Practical Magic Business Circles (an online offering where I and my circle sisters dived deeply into our businesses as guided by goddesses), The Goddess Self (a short online experience combining goddess guidance with the practice of sacred self-portraiture), The Selkie Petition (a Summer Solstice offering where I travelled to the wildly exquisite white beaches of the far north to petition the selkies on the behalf of myself and many many others for support and guidance in the tending of our soulskins), Norse Goddess Readings (my contribution to Randi Buckley’s Viking Woman Workshop and divined on Orkney’s Brough of Birsay beneath the all watching eyes of circling ravens), The Goddess Guidance group and Inner Circle (group and individual goddess readings including 1-on-1 skype sessions for those ready to take things to the next level), and the annual My Word Goddess Readings (connecting you to your goddess for the year – a much loved ritual for many!).
(connecting with Norse goddesses on the Brough of Birsay)
(petitioning the selkies in the far north of Scotland)
Not only that, but I also taught my summer class at the University of Stirling for the International Summer School on 19th Century British Gothic & Its Impact on Contemporary Popular Culture, had a self-portrait included in an exhibition in the Louvre, Paris, created my first solo exhibition in Portland, OR at Sage Gallery, took a group of women on a 2-day deep dive sacred chocolate experience, co-hosted a workshop on the goddess Medusa, and self-published a paperback edition of my first poetry collection From Revolutionary Lips.
(my first solo photographic exhibition!)
And I celebrated the first year where my business brought in the majority of our household income, and the first full year where both my husband and I have been fully self-employed. All of this in a year that also included a huge house move for us, February in France, a summer holiday retracing my roots (personal and ancestral) and Oct/Nov in the US.
This year, I’ve begun work on my next photographic collection (swooning over swans – I just cannot take enough photos of them!), I’ve finished a collaborative writing project along with 3 of the most gifted writers I know, and I’ve launched Embody Your Mythic Astrology with my best friend and soul sister Kathleen Prophet. This joint venture in particular is really so exciting for me as it’s allowing me to deepen my own explorations into myth writing and goddess astrology – such richness, I can’t tell you. The fact that I get to create this with Kathleen is just a gift beyond price.
(me and Kathleen on the summit of Mt Diablo on my last day in California last November – love this lady)
All this, and still so much more to come! More goddess workshops, another solstice selkie petition, goddess readings, myth writing, summer teaching and (hopefully!) another exhibition of photography.
(one of the many(!) swan photos that will form the basis of my next exhibition)
So, now you know why my brother and I were laughing so hard. Because the response to the question of what it is that I do? Whatever I most desire, would be the most accurate!
Which is why, my love, the Practical Magic Business Circles that I host twice a year are so deeply important to me. They’re an opportunity for women to gather and lean into the truth of their business as a co-creative expression of their desire and as a vessel of their uniqueness, their gifts, their soul medicine. I have seen so many full-hearted offerings conceived, birthed, nurtured and grown through these circles. Books, oracle cards, courses, retreats, communities, workshops, and those kinds of offerings (like the solstice selkie petition!) that are probably best described as “experiences”. The desire and the devotion expressed in these circles ripples out to touch the hearts and minds of thousands. Profoundly innovative and deeply practical, these circles are places where you are invited to drop into the question of what do you want to create next? What experience do you want to live? What change are you craving? What would feel delicious?
The doors to the next Practical Magic Business Circle opened yesterday, so you now have until the 4th April to claim your space and enter in. This time, we’ll be in circle for 10 weeks, and you will not only be initiated and supported into a profoundly helpful and uplifting sacred business practice, but you will also receive goddess business guidance, weekly check-ins, and the opportunity to be in community with like-souls.
On top of all this I’ll be sharing an intimate look into my own process and practice as I reveal what it is that I desire to create, change, experience, explore in my business. I will be available to answer your questions, witness your reflections, provide feedback and clear-seeing, as well as offering support to you as you connect more deeply to the goddess guidance that shows up for you during our time in circle with one another. In other words, I’m offering you access to me and my experience as an entrepreneur, a business woman, an artist, a goddess guide, a poet, a photographer, a mythic astrologer, a writer, an edgewalker and as your circle sister, so as to really help you to create the business that best expresses you, your gifts and your desire.
Sound good? Great! To claim your space in the next circle, read through the invitation and follow the instructions for payment. If you’ve worked with me before, then you know that I’m committed to ensuring that my offerings remain as financially accessible as possible to those that know in their heart of hearts that this work is for them. And as such, there are instalment options available so that you can spread the payments. Follow this link for all the details….
I so look forward to welcoming you there. It’s going to be exquisite!
