Girls and Grandmothers: The Effects of a Circle

Ox Alice Opening

There’s something very magical about a circle of women. The kind of energy that builds, even before the actual physical, face-to-face meeting, feels powerful.  An energetic frisson that builds and builds and builds as the time approaches for connection.  Like a thermal spiralling upwards and outwards calling us towards one another; calling us to join and form the circle.

The first two women meet, their voices cooing and calling, rising and falling, the vocal timbre and tone entwining with each other.  They hug, brief but full, before they turn towards the kitchen.  No sooner has the kettle boiled, than the next woman arrives and the ritual repeats.  And repeats.  And repeats.

And then they are all present, each woman sparkling in the glow of a circle well-made. Stories are shared.  Support is offered.  Solutions requested and provided.  Laughter rings out loud and often.  Hands are held, gratitude extended, and sometimes silence falls, small pauses where the unspeakable rests unspoken.

And amidst this rise and fall, coo and call, within this circle of ordinary, extraordinary women, I can’t help but wonder, ‘What could not be achieved in this circle?  What answer could we not fail to find?  Who could not be affected by the flow of positive energy extending in great waves from the joining of this circle?’

Online at the moment there is a blog campaign relating to The Girl Effect.  Tara Sophia Mohr describes it as ‘a powerful idea’ as it proposes that ‘by investing in girls in the developing world, we make an incredibly effective investment in eradicating poverty, creating thriving communities, and slowing the spread of AIDS.’

If you visit Tara’s site you can visit all the posts by those who have chosen to raise their voices, joined the campaign, helped to create the circle.

Because that’s what this is – an online circle which hums with the same vibration as when women meet around the kitchen table. It’s a space where a collective pooling of energy occurs and then is shared with a wider community.  A unification of focus that gains in intensity the more that join the circle, widening its reach, broadening its approach, strengthening its effect.

I’m reminded of the following quote:

“When the Grandmothers speak, the Earth will be healed
When the Grandmothers pray, Wisdom will be revealed
When the Grandmothers sing, the Earth will be made whole.”

We can all choose to be grandmothers by tapping into the wise woman part of ourselves: one of the many aspects of our own sacred feminine energy.  And by activating this archetype of the wise woman, just imagine how the girls in our global community might benefit. Just imagine what they might achieve for themselves and for others.  Just imagine that, as they too transition from maiden to mother to crone, that they too will contribute to the collective pool of wise woman energy.

A circle, perpetual in motion, that spins and sparkles, radiating light and warmth and wisdom.

Just imagine what this circle could achieve, and then choose if you will step forward to join in too…
