The darkness is profound. So rich that it feels like cool velvet pressed gently against our skin. Someone stumbles over a stone lying in the grass, and muffled laughter breaks out. I turn slightly towards my right and capture his hand in mine. He squeezes my fingers, and I imagine him smiling at me, even although I cannot see his lips. There’s a story brewing. Can’t you sense it? Can’t you taste it as it blows in on the tail of that cold north wind? It sweeps along the gutters collecting the spent leaves of summer now turned rust and saffron. It whistles through the boughs of the tree that swing and sway in response. It catches the strands of my hair, the hem of my coat, the fabric of my skirt, catching me mid-stride, threatening to topple me into the street. Demeter’s Story
Yesterday I released my retelling of Demeter’s Story to those who are participating in my online course Bloom by Moon. It’s a beautiful story that engages with the themes of mothering, grief, loss and the cyclic nature of things. It engages with issues of what it means to nurture another being, the empty-nest syndrome and the danger of over-investing our sense of self in our relationships with our children. However, it is not solely relevant for women who have birthed and raised children – I take a much broader view of the relevance of the mother goddess than that.
